Our Big Adventure
As a way to celebrate our retirement Thomas and I are planning a road trip to the west. We will begin our retirement going to new places and doing new things. Each year I choose a word or phrase to be a catch phrase for the year. This year my phrase is "finding the new" - see my blog. I think this trip will be our way of beginning the journey to this new phase of our lives.
Since photography has become a great joy in my life and a way for me to learn more about God's world and his word, taking pictures will be a big part of this adventure. This makes me a little nervous since I still have much to learn to call myself a landscape photographer. Many landscape photographers will say that the best time and maybe the only time to create a good photograph is during the golden hours - the hours right before and after sunrise and sunset. As I thought about our trip and the distances we will travel and the time we have, there will be many places where it will be impossible to be there during the perfect time for capturing images. I want to make sure that I don't miss the beauty of a place by being too concerned about getting the perfect shot. In preparing for the trip I am reading a book about photographing Glacier and the author, Gordon Sullivan, reminded me that even if I don't capture the perfect image that my memory of the place will be captured forever in my heart. My prayer is that God will open my eyes and show me his beauty each day even in the less than perfect times. I pray that the images I do capture and the pictures I create will bring a smile and joy to the viewer and be a way to share God's glory.
I have created this website to share some of the places we will go and the things we will see. The Trip Overview page gives an outline of our trip and the journal pages will be a place to add more detail - not only in the planning stages but as we go on the trip (follow the links in the menu). We will leave on August 21, 2017 and return on September 25. Our furthest point west and north will be Glacier National Park where we will meet up with DeeDee and Bret Taylor, our sister and brother in law. Based on my mileage calculations from Google maps, this is a total distance of about 5,000 miles. When we are in a place for more then one night we will be tent camping. Many of the times where we are only in a place one night we will be staying in KOA camping cabins. While we are in Glacier National Park, we will be staying with Bret and DeeDee Taylor in the park lodges.
